I used to be deathly afraid of spiders. As a kid, if ever I saw one in the house, I'd scream and get my mom or dad to kill the spider... and when I went to college, I later resorted to using a vacuum cleaner. Still now, every so often, when my kids scream "spider!" my husband will rush in to grab the spider with a big wad of tissue and throw it into the toilet and flush it down.
Alright, so I say that... but spiders are actually good for the environment and good for eating pests in our ecosystem. Catch and release when you can. Maybe it's the hot weather, but I found a couple pretty big spiders in our home yesterday and today. I'm not afraid of trying to squish them anymore. When the kids and husband allow me to, I just simply grab the nearest cup to trap it, then take a paper or something that is stiff that I can slide under, and then I take the spider outside. I basically hold the cup, and then slide the cup rapidly over the paper outside, as if to throw the spider into the plants.
Don't kill something just because you're afraid of it.
Mosquitos and flies are a different story.
